Sweet summer time

Sweet summer time. Spring and summer are my favourite
times of the year.
I just love being out and around in my garden as soon as I
get a chance.
Between working at the Motel and occasional guiding tours I
try to keep up with the weeds.
Garden in early June
And now in July!

My vegetable garden is producing good and I even have enough
to share lettuce and peas with friends. This year I tried something new.
Squash and peppers, and now: the first squash is ripening!
So exciting.
The bell peppers are a disappointment though. I was so proud to
see at least one fruit the other day.
But next time I checked, it was gone! Some critter must have
a taste for bell pepper. Too bad.

My flower bed along the front porch is now 4 years old and
really filling out.
Four years ago
And now in July 2014! Yeah!
Sometimes I think I should have become a gardener or landscape architect. I find it always so rewarding to see the changes one can make around a house.

Today I went with friends to an "all-song" evening at

Summer guests who know to play an instrument came up and performed while others enjoyed and sung along.
The place was packed and we all had a good time!

Tomorrow it is back to work again.
And the coming weekend will be very busy too. We will have our 2nd annual "Fog Fest" coming up.
Many local artists will be performing at various places for the
whole weekend.
Hopefully I get time off to be able to attend some of their shows.

And with this view, that I had the other day when a huge freighter came in and a small boat went by, I'll say good bye for today.

Thanks for visiting my blog!

Weird and weirder.

The last four days has been very wet and foggy.
We had a lot of thunderstorms coming through. Sometimes the window panes were rattling and the whole house seemed to reverberate.
It got to the point that Molly decided enough is enough. She decided to hide in the bathtub. She has never done such before.
Weird.

Today we had the first dry day. Returning from a walk with Molly I approached the van from back. What is that???
I saw a strange pattern on the rear door. That hadn't been there.

Upon a closer look it seems as if water has got behind the paint.
I have never seen such before.

We had LOTS of rain, but hey, isn't that weird?

Happy Days - Happy People

What a joy being back into a normal life! Shower, cooking, laundry, vacuum, phone/internet, you name it!
You don't know what you have until you are deprived of it!

I am very thankful for all these utility workers who really did, and still are doing, a tremendous job getting us back on the grid as soon as possible.
And just in time to be able to watch the semi final match of Germany-Brazil and Netherlands - Argentina! Not that I am sports crazy. But when it comes to the final on Sunday - I will be watching!!!
And YES, there is a bridge over to Campobello Island.
The Roosevelt Campobello International Bridge.

The other day I got a phone call where someone inquired if they had to take a ferry over to our Island. When I asked what direction they were coming from the answer was: Bar Harbor. That is coming up from the south-west. No need to go to Eastport, ME and take two ferries to get over here. Just take the bridge from Lubec, ME!
If you come from Canada, say St. John, then you can take the ferry. But, the ferry runs only from the end of June to the end of September. The rest of the year you have to go into the US (Maine) to get on to the island.
Back to a normal life - I had more visitors. Betty and John from Ontario came to stay over at our place.
Yesterday they were enjoying the company of my friends Rogette
and William. Both couples discovered that, many years ago, they
used to live in the same area, just a few miles apart from each
other, but never met until now.
Reminiscent of time long gone they talked about where they used to
go shopping, who was who, who might still be around and they had great fun in each others company.
Afterwards we made a trip to the Lighthouse.
Last week I waited, together with another couple, until the sand
bank was passable to get over to the island where the light-house
sits on, and then we climbed into the light tower.
View back from the top of the light towards the  parking lot.
No way to walk over by high tide
The water is subsiding, the sand bank appears

As you see it is only assessable by low tide. It took an hour and twenty minutes from when we arrived until we finally could
walk over.
From there on you will have about 4 hours to stay on and visit
before the waters rise and cover the sand bank again.

Yesterday we only had a peak from the main island towards the light house.

Some whale watchers were out on the waters too.

Now I am on a new project. Betty was so kind as to show me how to make a rug out of plastic bags. Here is my first evening worth of crocheting...
A new rug in the making....

BACK- after power outage!

Hi - I am back again! What an experience. Two days without power, phone and internet. Camping life.
The storm hit the island pretty bad and there is a lot of damage all around.
I just got online to send signs of being alive and unharmed in all kind of directions.
It started out Saturday around noon when the wind got worse and worse. I watched as a spruce tree came down onto a neighbours deck.
Later, I had to go to the motel and took these shots...
(Click on the photos for bigger images.)
A tree over the power line took fire
That one cut the power in our area for two days!
A tree partially on the road.
Sunday I toured the Island. Wilsons Beach was hardest hit. The photos speak for themselves.

Down near Mulholland Lighthouse.
Luckily our house had no damages. Some water came in through a door, and a wind protection came down. Lots of leafs on the ground and branches off the trees. I am really happy that nothing more happened here, compared. They say this was the worst in over 50 years. The park, golf course and campground are/were closed because of trees all over the roads. Now we have get back to normal.
Had to live camping style for two days.
But, what the h...! It is over.
Now it's time for a hot shower!!!
I hope all the other hurricanes go somewhere else. I had enough!
