Avocado-Dressed Tomatoes

My dear husband made it safely back to California, though without his suitcase. And the time of my "cold kitchen" comes to an end. It is back to work ;)
Today I made goulash, potatoes and avocado dressed tomatoes.


Avocado-Dressed Tomatoes 

Ingredients:
1 ripe avocado
1/3 c. mayonnaise (I used fat free sour cream)
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tbsp. minced onion
Dash of Worcestershire
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Salt to taste
3 lg. ripe tomatoes
Salad greens
Chopped chives (I used cilantro and parsley)

Mash together until smooth avocado, mayonnaise and seasonings. Arrange sliced tomatoes on bed of salad greens and pour the avocado dressing over them. Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve. This is a special "company" salad.

Mein Gönnergatte ist heil von der Reise wieder in Kalifornien angekommen. Auch wenn der Koffer noch in der Weltgeschichte herumgeistert.

Nun ist wieder Schluß mit der kalten Küche. Es heißt wieder: an die Arbeit.

Heute gab es Rindergoulasch, Salzkartoffeln und Tomaten mit Avocadosoße.

Gubben kom helskinnet tilbake til Kalifornien. Men kofferten ble igjen i Hamburg. Hvem hvet når den kommer hjem?
Blant annet betyr enden av reisen en slut på det "kaldet" kjøkkenet mitt. Tilbake til kjelen og matlagingen.
Idag laget jeg storfegryte, poteter og tomater med avocadosaus.

A Valentines Day Cake

Valentines Day!  
That is a good reason to have a party!
Last night there were gusts up to 40 m/h (64 km/h) and I was afraid that this would truncate the party. 
Even with the wind on the breezy side and a cloud cover moving in around noon nothing could stop us.


My contribution is a cake I found in the novel of Jan Karon. 
(Quote from the book:  A Light in the Window): "Esther Bolick's legendary cake..." " Her splendid orange marmalade cake was famed among all the local churches.") 
The descriptions sounded so tempting, that I had to look it up on the internet.


Esther's Orange-Marmalade Layer Cake


I had to make some minor adjustments but it turned out very well.

Doesn't look too bad.

Divide layers with help of a string.

Spoon the syrup over two layers. 

Add the orange marmalade filling.

Add some of the cream to the layers.

Ready - Set- Go!

Lots of cakes and cookies, music and fun.

Valentines Tag ist mal wieder ein Grund zum Feiern!
Gestern nacht war es allerdings sehr winding, mit Böen um 64 km/h und ich fürchtete schon das unsere Party nichts werden würde.
Heute war es immer noch recht windig und gegen Mittag kam noch ein Wolkenfeld auf aber die Party lief wie geplant.


Mein Betrag zum Fest stammt aus einem Buch das ich gerade lese.
Die Torte wurde so lecker beschrieben, daß ich mir das Rezept vom Internet gesucht habe. Esther´s Apfelsinenmarmeladentorte.
Außerdem gab es noch eine Menge Kuchen, Plätzchen und viel Spaß.

Valentines Dag.
Hvis vi trenger en grund for å feire, her er den. 
Det var storkalas idag med masse kaker, småkaker og mye gøy.
Igår natt var det veldig vindig, med kast av 64 km/h, og jeg frykted at festen måtte avlyses. Idag var det endå vindig og delvis skyet men festen ble feiret.


Jeg laget en kake som jeg leste om i en bok. Det hørtes så deilig ut at jeg gikk på nettet for å finne opskriften til den.

A Fascinating Moon

Some days ago we had a full moon. There is something with the moon that makes you stare at it. It is fascinating. I have again and again tried to capture the moon on film. Usually it only a bright white spot on the photo.

Recently my neighbour borrowed me an old fashioned book about photography with lots of good advices. 
Now!
Yesterday night I finally got a shot that actually showed the surface structure of the moon when I zoomed it in on the computer. Yeehaa! 


Aperture, shutter- speed, auto focus, manual option. 
Ten different shot, ten different settings.
Do i remember what I did out there in the dark? 
No.
So, I have to try again until I do remember.

Yes! That's what I wanted!

Vor ein paar Tagen hatten wir Vollmond. Irgendwie hat der runde Mond eine Fastzination der man kaum wiederstehen kann. Immer wieder muß man hinsehen.
Seit Jahren schon habe ich versucht ein besonders schönes Photo vom Mond zu schießen. Meistens endete es damit das man nur eine runde, weiße Fläche sieht.
Mittlerweile habe ich eine neue Kamera, und ein Stativ. Neulich brachte mir meine Nachbarin ein altes Buch übers Photografieren und ich bekam wieder ein paar gute Ideen. Und gestern abend hat es geklappt.
Zum ersten Mal habe ich die Oberflächenstruktur des Mondes photografiert! Toll.
Blende, Belichtung, automatische Belichtung, manuelle Handhabung.
Zehn verschiedene Photos, zehn verschiedenen Einstellungen.
Kann ich mich noch daran erinnern welche ich in der Dunkelheit gewählt habe?
Nee.
Pech gehabt. Da heißt es wiederholen, wiederholen, wiederholen bis ich es mir gemerkt habe.

Det har bestandig vært et ønske av meg å lage et perfekt fotografi av fulmånen. Vanligvis ser man bare en rund, hvit skive på bildet. Jeg har pøved igjen og igjen.
Igårkveld jeg laget dette bildet hvor man kan faktisk se noe av overflaten på månen!
Men trur du at jeg husker hva slags instilling jeg gjorde for å få det til?
Neida! 
Da er det bare å prøve igjen inntil jeg husker det. Men nå hvet jeg ialfall at the går an.

Annual Carrot Parade 2012

The Annual Holtville Carrot Parade

Today I went with a friend to watch the annual Carrot Parade. Celebrating the  producing and harvesting of lots of fresh vegetables in this area.
I have already seen it several years in a row but, again I took many photos. 


Lots of spectators, the weather was brilliant, though on the breezy side.
All the schools contributed with their music corps, various businesses had their floats nicely decorated.

The Centre Piece of the Parade!

Actually, if you went to see the the Christmas Parade you probably have seen it 
all, but so what? Parades are fun and entertaining. The theme for this season: "Home is Best" and "The Wizard of OZ."


The down side of it: It marks the beginning of the end for our stay down here in the California. In only a few weeks time we will be on our way home again.

Die alljährliche  Karotten Parade. 


Heute fuhr ich mit einer Nachbarin nach Holtville um uns die Karottenparade  anzusehen.  Obwohl das Spektakel  schon in früheren Jahren besucht habe, habe ich mal wieder viel Photos geschossen.


Das schöne, warme Wetter hatte viele Zuschauer angelockt. Gegen Ende der Parade kam leider ein starker Wind auf und wirbelte viel Sand von den Feldern durch die Luft. 


Viele örtliche Schulen stellen ihre eigenen Musikgruppen, die Betriebe nehmen mit dekorierten Anhängern teil. Das Thema in diesem Jahr: "Zuhause ist es am Besten" und " Der Magier von OZ".
Wenn man die Weihnachtsparade angesehen hat kennt man die meisten Gruppen schon. Aber was soll´s! Es hat Spaß gemacht und war unterhaltsam.


Etwas wehmütig ist es auch, denn es kündigt das nahende Ende unseres Aufenthalts im Süden an. In nur wenigen Wochen werden wir schon wieder auf dem Heimweg sein.

Gulrotomtoget
Idag kjørte vi til Holtville for å se det årlige Gulrot-Omtog. Jeg har allerede set den i flere år men det er morsomt hver gang.
Mange folk var ute langs veien, været var deilig varm men det var mye vind som blåste sand igjenom luften.
Flere skolekorps bidra med musikk og bedrifter med sine pyntete vogntog. Themaet iår: "Hjemme er best" og "The Wizard of OZ".
Når man har set juleomtoget kjenner man nok igjen de fleste deltager, men det gjør ingenting. Det er altid morsomt. Jeg tok igjen flere bilder.
Men en ting er synd: omtoget idag minner om at tiden i vår vinterhjem nærmer seg slutten nokså snart. Noen få uker og vi er på vei hjem igjen.
